SALT – William Bassett, b. 5 Nov 1863, d. 14-Mar-50, b. Staffordshire, England lived Cumb. Co., NS
Submitted by Keith Jackson Oct-02

I’m researching my wife’s family and we know that four of her Great uncles emigrated to Canada. We’ve been able to contact the families of the three who went to Saskatchewan but have had little luck with the fourth. He was

William Bassett Salt born 5th November 1863, Staffordshire (Bradnop area) and died 14 March 1950, possibly Pugwash area.

He was the eldest child of:

Hezekiah Salt and Hannah Bassett. Hannah died in 1869 and Will was brought up by his father and stepmother, Ann Mycock.

He had three daughters in England by his first wife, Emma Maria Cawdell (1863-1900): Ethel Maud (b 1891), Stella Margaret (b 1892) and Dorothy May (b 1894).

He farmed at Mount Pleasant, Belper, Derbyshire in the early 1890s before moving to Breach Farm, Packington, Leicestershire before Dorothy was born. From Trades Directories, I know he was at Breach Farm in 1904 but he was in Canada by 1914 from family archives. In Canada he had four more children by a second wife whose identity is unknown. The second family were Donald, Nora, Marjorie and Rob.

The suggestion of Pugwash came from one of his nephews in Lloydminster, who recalled being told he had “an uncle in Pugwash” but I have no further details. I would be grateful if you would enter the details on your database and for any suggestions you might have as to how I might progress the search.

Many thanks,
Keith Jackson

SCOTT (RECTOR) – Basil Earl, b. 18-Aug-04, d. 26-Mar-41, b. Springhill, Cumberland County, NS
Submitted by Janice Rector Aug-01

Looking for information on Basil Earl Rector born August 18, 1904 in Springhill, Nova Scotia. Birth father possibly James Scott; Basil was adopted by Rueben and Emma Rector.
Rueben married Emma on March 23, 1895 in Springhill, NS and in the same year he left Emma to marry Emma’s sister, Mary, as Emma could not have children. Emma married Samuel A. Morrow on Sept. 7, 1912 in NS. Samuel died about 1954 and Emma about 1967. Emma is buried in Upham, NS. Basil’s birth mother may have died when Basil was 3 yrs. old and he may possibly have two sisters that were older than him. Partial adoption record shows that birth name may have been Earl Basil. Basil was a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge in Upham. In 1926 he married Blanche Sarah Buchanan in NB. Basil died at 36 yrs. of age on March 26, 1941 in Hanford Brook, NB.
Any information to fill in the gaps would be appreciated.

SHERMAN – Caleb, b. 1703, d. c.1768, Cumberland Township or Massachusetts
Submitted by Sherman William Bear Jul-15

Sherman/Shearman/Sharman
Caleb
b. 1703
d. circa 1768
Location not certain, either Cumberland Township, Cumberland County, NS or Massachusetts
Comments: Caleb Sherman (b. 1703) came to the Chegnecto region with his two sons, Young Sherman (b. circa 1746-?) and Ring (b. 1749 – ?) . Caleb received a land grant in the vicinity of Fort Cumberland circa 1765. After his death, his sons sold the property and bought a large portion of the Gay Grant along the Petitcodiac River. Ring and Young Sherman were surveyor assistants who located the new boundary when New Brunswick became a separate province from Nova Scotia in 1784.

I am trying to learn as much as possible about these Sherman family members during their time in Canada.
If available, I would like a copy of the plat map that shows the Caleb Sherman parcel at Fort Cumberland.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

I’m hoping you can help me. I’m looking for a death record for a gr-gr-grandfather. John C. Stewart died sometime between 1869 (birth of last child with Emeline Betts Stewart), and the census of 1871. In that census he is missing (name was incorrectly listed as Steward and listed Emeline and the boys; Balcolm, Kempton and Johnson). In 1873 Emeline is married again to a Thomas Fillmore and is listed as a widow. The info listed for John C. Stewart is: born in Nappan and living in Little River at time of marriage in 1865. They lived in Little River at the time of last baby in 1869. Emeline then appears without John in River Phillip 1871 census. John listed as 29 at time of marriage in 1865 and his father’s name was Henry.
Not sure if this is too much info or not enough!! Thanks for your time and effort,
Laurane Stewart
