HARTLEY – Henry, b. 30 Dec 1902, d. bet. 1903-1908, Castleford, Eng,/ Springhill, NS
Submitted by Jeff Rueger Jan. 2021

Surname or Maiden Name : Hartley
Given Name : Henry
Birth Year : 30 Dec 1902 Castleford, Yorkshire, England
Death Year : unknown but likely btwn 1904 and 1908
Location : Springhill
Your Name & E-mail Address: Jeff Rueger jeff@jrueger.ca

Henry arrived in Nova Scotia in Dec 1903 with his parents James Thomas and Selina Hartley along with his 10 siblings. His father and older brothers were all miners and worked at the Springhill Mines until Jul 1908 when most of the family returned to England and later emigrated to Australia. Henry is not on the passenger lists for the return trip to England which leads me to believe that he died in Springhill sometime between Dec 1903 and July 1908. Unfortunately, this corresponds to a gap in the Nova Scotia Archives death records. The family was Methodist, but I cannot find any records of Methodist graveyards in the area, nor any death notices in local newspapers of the time. I am limited to online digital searching, being in British Columbia and unable to travel.

Three older brothers remained in Springhill as miners when the rest of the family returned to England. William Hartley, my great grandfather, married Pauline Highton in 1905 in Springhill, and by 1911 had moved to the coal mine in Bankhead, Alberta where he died in 1918 (perhaps in the flu epidemic though the medical records are unclear). James Hartley married Lucy Hopkins in 1909 in Springhill and remained there until his death in 1920 in a likely mining accident. His family remained in Springhill and eventually moved to British Columbia in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Thomas Hartley married Mary Jane Buck in 1908 in Springhill and he too later moved to the mines in Alberta before finally emigrating to Australia in 1925.

Another brother Edwin Hartley married Ethel Pearson in 1906 in Springhill but returned to England with Ethel and their son in early 1908 where they remained until 1922 when they also emigrated to Australia.

So – I am looking for any assistance or information to confirm my hypothesis that Henry Hartley in fact died in the Springhill area between Dec 1903 and Jul 1908. As well information on the Hartley family during their time in Springhill would be much appreciated by both their descendants in Canada as well as in Australia. The Australia clan have been unable to provide any information as to Henry Hartley.

Thanks so much, Jeff Rueger

HEON – Charles, b. bef.1720, Port Royal, NS & Beaubasin, Cumb. Twshp., NS
Submitted by Denise J. McCartney Apr-02

HEON

The family name is = Heon
Starting with Charles Heon, they were in Acadia when the Great Disturbance took place between 1750-58. Thay came from Normandie France.
I believe that Charles Heon established himself in Port Royal around 1720 and in 1723 he married Anne Clemenceau, then moved to Beaubassin where seven children were born. Anne died in 1748, he was then married to Marguerite Bourgeois of the same year.
I believe that Charles Heon’s occupation was ship builder.

Charles would be my 6th. generation great grandfather.
I am trying to gather all the data on the Heon’s to complete my Family Geneology. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.
Thank-you for taking the time to read my letter.

Sincerely Denise J. McCartney ( nee Heon )
